United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, there are a number of issues with authoritarianism within public (state) schools in the 21st century:

  • almost all state schools require a specific school uniform
  • authoritarian approaches to schooling are on the increase

Authoritarian approaches to schooling can include "zero tolerance" type polices with regard to behaviour, excessive and unnecessary punishments, invasion of privacy, use of "isolation booths" and "calming rooms", and more.

Recent incidents in the UK have included:

Michaela School

Michaela Community School is a secondary school for pupils aged 11 to 18 in Wembley, operating as a "free school". It has become infamous for its authoritarian regime. Right-wing politicians have been heavily involved in the school: Braverman and Birbalsingh: The Close Tory Ties of the Right Wing’s Beloved ‘Strictest Headmistress’  – Byline Times

According to Wikipedia, 'There is a "zero tolerance" policy regarding poor behaviour. A "boot camp" week at the start of the year teaches the new year 7 pupils the rules and the consequences of breaking them. There is a strict uniform code and no group work. Children sit in rows, learn by rote and walk in single file between classrooms. Pupils must be silent in school corridors and are forbidden to gather in groups larger than four', even during breaktimes and the lunch hour.
